Heena Sidhu Floors All After Striking Gold At Commonwealth Shooting Championships
Touted to be one of India's big prospects for a medal, Heena Sidhu left a billion fans disappointed after failing to qualify for the main event of 10m women's air pistol event at the Rio Games. A 14th-place finish and eventually an exit in the qualifying round was surely not what her fans expected from the former world no. 1, but the Indian shooter didn't just give up, she came back stronger and better than ever. © BCCL Going from strength to strength, the 28-year-old made a stellar comeback in the ISSF World Cup Finals earlier in February where she teamed up with Jitu Rai to strike gold in the mixed team event. Despite trailing in the semi-final stage, the Indian duo made a spirited comeback in the contest to win 5-3. In May, she had also won bronze in the women's 10 air pistol event at the Grand Prix of Liberation Plaza Shooting Championships in the Czech Republic. Shooting 218.8 in the eight-woman final, Heena finished third in the event which was won by Rio Olympic gold and bronze medallist, Anna Korakaki of Greece. Continuing her terrific form this year, Heena produced yet another brilliant performance to bag a gold medal at the Commonwealth Shooting Championships in Brisbane. The Indian star scored 240.8 in the women's 10m Air Pistol final to finish ahead of Australians Elena Galiabovitch (238.2) and Kristy Gillman (213.7) who finished second and third respectively. Apart from Sidhu, Deepak Kumar also gave the Indian fans a reason to cheer following his bronze-medal finish in the men's 10m Air Rifle event. In the same event, London Olympic bronze-medallist Gagan Narang - who was expected to make India proud after creating a Commonwealth record of 626.2 points in the qualification round - sadly finished fourth. Here's how Twitter lauded Heena Sidhu for her extraordinary feat: Well done, @HeenaSidhu10, on your golden effort at the Commonwealth Shooting Championship.
