Apple Is Shifting Focus To Reliability In iOS 12 Because iOS 11 Has A Lot Of Problems
It may feel like iOS 11 was just released, but Apple is already hard at work on the next version of its software. According to a report from Axios, the next major iOS update will focus on improving reliability and performance. After a flurry of embarrassing bugs in this year's release of iOS, Apple is reportedly scaling back its plans for iOS 12 as it shifts its focus to quality and performance. This means that Apple is likely to push many of the front-facing iOS 12 features and app redesigns to iOS 13 – more than a year-and-a-half away. © Reuters With iOS 12, the company intends to focus on improving the quality of its update with new security fixes and performance gains. This means that new features – a number of which were planned for later this year – will take a backseat and get pushed into next year. Apple reportedly postponed various features including “a refresh of the home screen and in-car user interfaces, improvements to core apps like mail and updates to the picture-taking, photo editing, and sharing experiences.” © Apple There's good reason to be disappointed with a delayed redesign of these apps. Right now, Mail lacks advanced productivity features and even some simple needs like the ability to hyperlink text. Apple also hasn't made significant changes to the home screen in ages. It has added folders, a page full of widgets, and overhauled the lock screen, but a serious revamp of the home screen is long overdue. It has been a rough launch for iOS 11. First, there was the autocorrect bug. Then the Dec. 2 shutdown bug. Then Apple was exposed for slowing down old iPhones. Then malicious links in Messages app were causing iPhones to crash. And that's not to mention the serious vulnerabilities that cropped up in macOS. © MensXP It is also reported that the new focus on refinement will be a tough sell. Users are accustomed to seeing major front-facing features in each yearly iOS update, and performance and stability aren't as exciting as Live Photos or a sleek new home screen. Axios says Apple is, “prioritizing work to make iPhones more responsive and less prone to cause customer support issues,” which would be a big win for current, past, and future iPhones. So when will iOS 12 be released? We can expect a WWDC 2018 announcement in June, followed shortly by an iOS 12 beta. Those who aren't inclined towards the beta version will have to wait for the official release that usually comes in September. Source: Axios
