This Man From Bihar Has Received His Master's Degree In Economics At The Age Of 98

For a lot of people, clearing board exams is the toughest task of their life. And by the time they graduate, they reach their saturation point in terms of studies. And post graduation? Well, that is out of the question. But a man from Bihar has proved that there is no age to learn or study and that “age is just a number” definitely stands true. Raj Kumar Vaishya has become the recipient of a postgraduate degree at the age of 98 years. © The Better India At the 12th annual convocation of Nalanda Open University in Bihar, he was awarded a master's degree in Economics by Meghalaya Governor Ganga Prasad. Bihar: 98-year-old Raj Kumar who passed MA (economics) examination from Patna's Nalanda Open University in September, receives his degree from the university. On being asked what message he has for the young generation, he said, 'always keep trying.' http://pic.twitter.com/vSl2AQiPdI — ANI (@ANI) December 26, 2017 "I am happy today. I had worked hard. For long, I had cherished the dream of completing my masters... the young should concentrate on their education and not on career alone," Mr Vaishya told reporters in Patna after receiving the degree. Defying all olds, Raj Kumar's story is nothing short of inspiring. He graduated in 1938 from Agra University and then went on to get a degree in law in 1940. However, he did not pursue his post graduation then, as he got a job as a 'law officer' with Christian Mica Industry at Koderma. “I failed to pursue a postgraduate programme at that time due to family responsibilities," he recalled in an interview. After retiring in 1980, Vaishya decided to pursue studies all over again. And the reason behind this will definitely leave you impressed. The man wanted to study economics in order to get answers to questions like why China suddenly devalued its currency, how to provide relief to people from inflation and why our country has failed to solve the problem of poverty and unemployment. © Rediff However, he took some time off after he retired before applying for the course. And in 2015, he finally enrolled for MA (Economics) in 2015. © Rediff And this year, he cleared the course with second division. If you are thinking as to how his old age never became a hurdle for him, we should tell you that even today; he can read without his spectacles and can write fluent Hindi and English. He also revealed, “I only take help of the walker after I fractured my back a few years ago. I don't have any health issues.” However, he does admit that it was not easy to follow the routine of a student at his age as he said, "It was really difficult for me to wake up early to prepare for the exams." © Wittyfeed According to university officials, he was determined that he sat for a three-hour MA first year examination in 2016 and the final year exam in 2017 along with students younger than his grandchildren. He wrote in English and used nearly two dozen sheets in each exam. Seeing his hard work and zeal, the university has decided to preserve his notebooks as a source of inspiration for the youth. © Twitter After hearing his story, we have to say that the man has set an example for millions of people and for all those who make excuses to not study or to give up on their dreams.
