Shahid Afridi Calls Indian Army An 'Oppressive Regime', Sparks Massive Outrage On Twitter
Few months back, former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi managed to earn the respect of the Indian fans during the ice cricket tournament in Switzerland. While clicking a photo with an Indian fan, Afridi politely asked the woman to hold the tri-colour in the correct manner. His concern for the Indian national flag helped him in winning many hearts in the country. But, on 3rd April, the man who was once praised by Indians has now drawn the ire of the entire country - courtesy his insensitive comments about the Indian Armed Forces and the ongoing dispute in Kashmir. It wasn't the first time when the 38-year-old had spoken about the situation in the Valley, but this time around, he seems to have crossed the line. Appalling and worrisome situation ongoing in the Indian Occupied Kashmir.Innocents being shot down by oppressive regime to clamp voice of self determination & independence. Wonder where is the @UN & other int bodies & why aren't they making efforts to stop this bloodshed? — Shahid Afridi (@SAfridiOfficial) April 3, 2018 Taking to Twitter, Afridi wrote: "Appalling and worrisome situation ongoing in the Indian Occupied Kashmir. Innocents being shot down by oppressive regime to clamp voice of self determination & independence. Wonder where is the @UN & other int bodies & why aren't they making efforts to stop this bloodshed?". Afridi's tweet was in reference to the series of counter-insurgency operations in three different areas of South Kashmir on Sunday. Indian armed forces handed a major setback to the terror groups in the Valley. A total of 12 terrorists were gunned down in what turned out to be one of the biggest counter-offensives against terrorist outfits in recent times in Kashmir. © BCCL The operations rendered a severe blow to terror groups such as Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba, but it sadly came at a cost of five lives. Two civilians and three Army jawans lost their lives during the gruelling operations. While the details on how or why the two civilians were killed isn't revealed, the demise of the three Army soldiers once again highlighted the never-ending sacrifices they make to keep us safe. At a time when the country was mourning the ever-increasing death toll of their jawans, Afridi's decision to call the Indian Army an 'oppressive regime' didn't go down well with the citizens. Just a Correction : it's a "Pakistan Occupying Kashmir" .. KASHMIR WAS, IS AND WILL BE A INTEGRAL PART OF INDIA ð®ð³. — Virat Kohliâºï¸ (@imVkohi) April 3, 2018 Even Pakistani's wanted to be in India, feel lucky to be Indian — विà¤à¤¾à¤¸ दà¥à¤µà¤¾à¤¸à¥ (@VikasDewasi1) April 3, 2018 Being a respected man and cricketer you should not be too much indulged in political situation of other countries and focus on wellbeing of Pakistan!!! — sunit shrivastava (@sunit_utd) April 3, 2018 Mr Afridi turn back to your own dunce In #Balochistan your own Govt is killing your own people in hundreds every day. set your own home in order first b4 you peep this side of the fence. No empathy for fellow Pashtuns but you care about Kashmiris? Eh? — Aveek Ballal Senzai (@aveeksen) April 3, 2018 Last year, Afridi had attracted similar backlash for his tweets on Kashmir. "Kashmir has been suffering from brutality since past many decades. its high time this issue shd be resolved which has taken infinite lives," he tweeted.
