The Weird Findings Of Angry YouTube Shooter Nasim Aghdam's Social Media Accounts

Imposing self-portraits, vegan music videos, workouts and parodies, the YouTube account and personal website of disgruntled shooter Nasim Aghdam is bizarre, to say the least. © nasimesabz Nasim Aghdam opened fire at YouTube's headquarters in California, injuring three people before shooting herself dead. Reportedly, she was unhappy with YouTube's new policy that drastically reduced the monetary compensation from ad revenues. A website associated with Nasim Aghdam gives insight into the mind of the youtube shooter. © nasimesabz “BE AWARE! Dictatorship exists in all countries but with different tactics! They only care for personal short-term profits & do anything to reach their goals even by fooling simple-minded people, hiding the truth, manipulating science & everything, putting public mental & physical health at risk, abusing non-human animals, polluting environment, destroying family values, promoting materialism & sexual degeneration in the name of freedom & turning people into programmed robots!,” she wrote on the website nasimesabz.com. "Make the lie big, Make it simple, Keep saying it, And eventually they will believe it," she wrote quoting Adolf Hitler. “There is no free speech in real world & you will be suppressed for telling the truth that is not supported by the system. Well, I had to explain it because it's apparently not and I hate saying this cliché but seems like 'common sense is not that common anymore', and hence the definition. AIADMK decided to go on a one-day hunger strike as a way of putting pressure on the Centre to set up the Cauvery Management board. The fast was supposed to be from 8am to 5pm yesterday, which is such an easy task. People can have breakfast before 8 and then just have to last till 5 and then can even have dinner after. But no, people don't have self-control; during the protest, the party cadres in districts like Vellore, Coimbatore and Salem were seen gorging on Biryani followed by consumption of liquor. Forget Data Privacy, Facial Recognition Might Be A Bigger Security Threat In Future

It's been around for a long time but face recognition tech didn't really capture the public's imagination till Apple launched FaceID on the new iPhone X. On the face of it, it all seems rather simple - in a nutshell, your phone decides if it's really you by scanning your face in 3D. But the current-gen tech (from Apple, Microsoft, and other tech giants) is anything but simple - it's taken us decades to get to this point, and it's vastly better than what we had till a few years ago. At the same time, there's a lot more here at stake, than ease of use, for all you people who are too indolent to enter PINs and passwords - face recognition tech (and its cousin - gait analysis) can have serious privacy implications. The Tech Behind Facial Recognition © Pinterest The most famous example, of course, is the iPhone X. Its bezel-less display and slim profile meant Apple didn't have enough space to put in a fingerprint sensor. And of course, as smartphone buyers tend to fall into the 'quick, show us something shiny before we fall out of love with your brand' school of consumerism, Apple introduced FaceID. And credit to Apple, FaceID does seem impressive - a fancy depth-sensing camera makes this happen, pretty much seamlessly, in Apple's own words, by 'projecting and analysing over 30,000 invisible dots to create a depth map of your face and also captures an infrared image of your face'. According to Apple, FaceID is more secure than TouchID, with the probability a random person could unlock your new iPhone going down to 1 in 100,000, from 1 in 50,000. Then there's Microsoft Hello, which also uses depth and infrared sensing tech (usually Intel RealSense) to scan your face (depending on your device, fingerprint and iris scanning might be other options). And we're sure you've come across Facebook and Google Photos' auto-tagging features that do a pretty good (and scary, if you're a privacy freak) job of identifying people in photos. Facial Recognition Still Isn't Perfect © Pinterest Of course, there are bugs - previous-gen facial recognition tech had trouble differentiating between people and their photos (a problem mostly solved by using depth sensing and infrared cameras). Then there was the uncomfortable issue of race - minorities and non-white people have often reported loads of issues - from misidentification to being 'invisible'. And these issues haven't gone away completely. Many users in China have complained that Apple's FaceID is often being unable to tell the difference between family members, other tests have shown it won't really protect you against your twin (better hope your twin's not too evil), while Vietnamese security company Bkav has demonstrated it's even possible to fool Apple's tech using a homemade mask. Of course, no tech's perfect and facial recognition tech will only get better with every generation, but it's something you need to be aware of if you use it to secure your phone or laptop - nothing's still as secure as a proper password or even a PIN! Big Brother Loves Facial Recognition © Pinterest It's an old trope, but it's true - the trade-off for ease of use is usually a lack of security, or lowered privacy. But as facial recognition tech improves, it'll get more secure, and at the same time, it could really become a privacy headache. In fact, law enforcement agencies the world over have long been using facial recognition to track suspects. In the US, local and federal law enforcement have been utilising facial recognition to identify suspects, while in China, even people accused of minor crimes have been tracked using this tech. In Russia, it's been used to identify people at protests, and a year or so ago, a developer even launched a controversial app that could cross-check people in your photos against social networking profiles. Meanwhile, researchers are also moving ahead with gait recognition, which uses the way we walk as a unique identifier. This might seem rather far-fetched, but while even a minimal disguise can fool a facial recognition system, we can't really change the way we walk - and certainly not for extended periods of time! While you might say that law enforcement or government usage of facial recognition isn't much of a concern as you'd never break the law, keep these facts in mind - a future authoritarian government might not be too concerned with the niceties of law; and what happens if there's a data breach? © Pinterest Many citizens, tech gurus, and privacy activists have raised concerns of how undemocratic regimes, stalkers, and criminals could take advantage of facial recognition tech. But the real threat could be far more subtle and insidious than an evil dictator's minions chasing you! It's the commercialisation of this tech that could be a greater headache. Imagine a future where facial recognition is commonplace, with retailers tracking your face and even analysing emotions to see what you feel about their products, and adjusting prices accordingly; Or a stadium not allowing you inside as you've been identified as a very vocal fan; Or perhaps someone launches an app that lets anyone track what you've been doing by analysing public images or even those from poorly secured CCTV cameras? Just like with any other technology that's become affordable enough to become commonplace, we'll see the bad come along with the good. And with AI and machine learning becoming more powerful with each passing day, we can also expect to see new uses of facial recognition tech that we wouldn't have imagined!

The popular gay dating app, Grindr, found itself in the middle of a data leak controversy after it was found sharing sensitive user information - including their HIV status - with two analytics companies. For the uninitiated, Grindr is an extremely popular dating and hook-up app for gay and bisexual men (the GBTQ group to be specific). It started in 2009 and has more than 3.6 million daily active users across the world. It is location and proximity based, like Tinder. Users can share as much or as little information about themselves as they choose in their profiles - from their pictures to their HIV status. © Twitter The app also has a feature where it gives users the option of getting a reminder to be tested for HIV every 3 to 6 months based on the data they provided. © Twitter Grindr clarified that it has not 'leaked' the data for any monetary benefits or any other reason whatsoever, and it was purely an exercise in testing and validating the way they roll out the platform with 'two highly-regarded software vendors'. © Twitter The fact that Grindr shared this information with Apptimize and Localytics - two analytics companies that help with marketing strategies by optimizing apps - has received major backlash from the users. © Twitter However, they have now decided to stop sharing sensitive information like HIV status with third parties, and also have decided to delete the data already sent across. © Twitter Scott Chen, the CTO of Grindr, has issued a statement where it has been made clear that the privacy policy of Grindr states that Grindr is a public platform, and it should be treated as such. How A BITS Pilani Engineer Became A Full-Time Traveller And Trekked Solo To Everest Base Camp

We all want to do this – quit our jobs and travel full-time. It has been talked about so much it has almost become a cliché, and yet we still can't bring ourselves to take the plunge. But every once in a while, we come across the story of a free spirit who manages to break the cycle and come out alive. There are people out there who have given up their cushy corporate jobs to travel the world and they haven't looked back. One such person is Jatin Adlakha, a computer science engineer from BITS Pilani, who is now a full-time traveller. For the past 4 years, he has been travelling on his bike and has covered over 70,000 km. Last year, Jatin managed to trek solo to Mt. Everest Base Camp and the journey changed his life forever. © Jatin Adlakha Like you and me, he worked a regular 9-to-6 job in a corporate company. And like most middle class Indian families, his childhood consisted of regular family trips on LTC, thanks to his banker dad. But the travel bug hit him hard when he got his first bike. Jatin set off to explore the country on the weekends he got off from work. The call of the road was strong and eventually, Jatin decided to quit his job to do what he loved most – travel to places unknown to him. One of the most difficult parts of quitting your job to follow our passion, besides the financial part, is convincing your parents. Like most Indian parents, they were apprehensive. Jatin says, “For them, it was a 3 years' journey from saying, 'No, it's not going to happen', 'You're going mad', to 'Okay, but not alone', to 'Take Care' to finally, 'Enjoy!'.” Sooner or later, parents do come around and give in to our decisions in life, don't they? © Jatin Adlakha The lure of the hills was enticing enough for Jatin to leave everything behind. He sold off his belongings, and set off for one of the most life-changing trips one can ever undertake in life – a solo trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp. For the uninitiated, the Everest Base Camp (EBC) is at 5346m above sea level and witnesses temperatures as low as -20 degree Celsius. The winds are so cold and harsh they can effectively tear your skin away. But for thrill-seekers and mountain-lovers, that is just something that makes the challenge sweeter. Talking about the trek, Jatin says, “A typical day on the trail looked like waking up around 5-530 in the morning to a day which already had opened up, freshening up maintaining a distant relationship with water, and starting the walk around 7-730am after a heavy breakfast.” © Jatin Adlakha When asked the most beautiful thing he learnt from his travels, Jatin reminisces fondly, “I found that love is everywhere. In newness, in strangers, and even in the wild. Here is a story: “In my 2 days at Namche Bazaar (a mountain town on the Everest Base Camp trek), I stayed in a local Nepali house with Sherpas—I had befriended one of them while trekking up. I had shared my bed with 10 to 15 porters, it was a giant bed made out of keeping many cots together […] The love that I received there was exceptional. The day I was to pack up and leave for my trek ahead, there was a frenzied atmosphere in the room, everyone was making sure I had everything I needed. Picture your mom sending you off on the day of an exam making sure you got everything; it was like that, with 5-7 moms ( the caretaker of the house, others and the Sherpas)! Such love is highly impactful, it gave me a sense of responsibility to give back the love to society, to do many more random acts of kindness.” *A page from my Adventure Notebook* . . "To Travel is to find a new perspective.", I was hearing Jason Silva say this just today. Yep, that's about right. And To Adventure I must say is to discover your own potential, gauge just a little more from that unfathomable infinite pool we carry within. . . Well aware that I will get camps in Kheerganga, I had still carried my tent with me on the (~12 kms each side) trek to train myself for a tougher trek in near future. It had rained heavily that night, the heavy downpour sounded like music to my ears; and in that cold weather, I slept curled up in my blanket oblivious to the materialistic worries of the world. Come morning, some folks from nearby tents joined me for some chat bringing their chairs, and I sat on the boulder savouring the view; rejoiced. . . This was part of my solo Himalayan Odyssey on my bike and with my tent which lasted 81 days and 3,688.9 kms and recently concluded. When I ask him about any bad experiences he faced while travelling, he says, “I tend to forget the negative experiences very naturally. On the road things happen on constant basis, good and bad, I learn from the bad but my body as if almost on auto mode doesn't keep brooding over the bad experience.” Jatin is unfazed even as he recalls a bike accident he had while riding through Maharashtra. You change a little with every trip undertaken. You are no longer the same person. For Jatin, the trek to the Everest Base Camp was a life-changing one. His humble confession about his trekking experience says it all: “I interacted with Sherpas who had walked to EBC over forty times carrying weights over 80 kilos while my 8 kg bag seemed like a rock sometimes. I walked with an Everest Summiteer for almost 2 hours, who was returning from her successful summit to Mt Amadablan at 6800 m. I witnessed a girl breaking into laughter upon the falling of her artificial leg while trekking up Namche Bazaar, 'Oh, it's the sweat', she said. I sat consumed in the games the mountains, clouds and the sun played. I gaped at those mountains of gigantic proportions and submitted. I returned with newer experiences and friendships, which I shall cherish forever with a smile. Put in my place by those snow-clad huge mountains, maybe I gained nothing for a change.
